Q: What is Hammers of Hope?

A: Hammers of Hope is program of Jefferson County Community Partnership. In partnership with the community, it seeks to provide accessibility ramps, home modifications and repairs for low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly and the disabled, so that they may continue to live independently. 

Q: Why are Hammers of Hope services needed?

A: Many of our neighbors have worked hard all their lives and have been able physically and financially to repair their own homes.  Due to illness, aging or any number of uncontrollable causes, they are unable to do the repair work needed and their homes have become unsafe and unlivable. The result is loss of the homeowner’s independence and crumbling neighborhoods.  One day of volunteer effort can make a difference in people’s lives.

Q: Who is eligible for Hammers of Hope services?

A: Low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly and the disabled who are not able to do the work themselves and non-profit facilities are eligible.

Home Repairs

Q: How are homes selected?

A: Homeowners complete and submit the Hammers of Hope application required documents. Once the application has been approved the house is previewed by the House Selection committee. If the House Selection committee determines that the house is an appropriate candidate for Hammers of Hope, the house is then previewed by the Work Evaluators. They add the technical expertise needed to determine if the house is an appropriate candidate for Rebuilding Day.

Q: What area does Hammers of Hope serve?

A: Repairs are made in the municipalities and unincorporated areas throughout Jefferson County.

Q: What kind of repairs done?

A: With many of our grants our main focus is providing accessibility ramps for seniors and persons with a disability.  However when funding is available, repairs could include minor carpentry, plumbing, electrical, plastering, painting, glazing, cleaning, and much, much more. The focus is to keep homeowners living independently in safety and to complete the work in one day.  We currently have funding for some projects for persons under age 60.

Q: Is there a cost to the homeowner?

A: No. All repairs are paid for by monetary donations or in-kind donations from businesses, foundations, service organizations, clubs, associations and individuals — from neighbors who care — at no cost to the homeowners.

 Volunteer Opportunities

Q: Who volunteers?

A: Anyone fourteen and older can be a volunteer.  Volunteers come from religious groups, businesses, schools, community service organizations, labor unions, corporations, associations, government employees and concerned individuals. They represent all professions: secretaries, lawyers, truck drivers, doctors, judges, policemen, housewives, students, etc.  Volunteers do not need to be skilled at home repairs.

Q: Can I volunteer one day a year?

A: Yes!
